MARY & THE PIGEONS
Mary-clare Barnecutt, aka Marypigeon was born in Belfast and grew up in Hull- she has lived in Dublin for the past 20 years after moving to take the first M Phil in Creative writing at Trinity College Dublin.
She has had poems and short stories broadcast on RTÉ and published in various Irish and British journals such as Cyphers, Stinging Fly, Agenda, Oxfam poetry award calendar and Imp Press.
While in Dublin she rekindled her music career as a cellist playing everything from cello concertos to miming on stage with Westlife. After six million wedding gigs and a lot of long notes with singer-songwriters she endeavoured to make her own album featuring her favourite sounds and some of her favourite people. Mary & the Pigeons ‘Into Air’ was released in April of last year on her own label, Sharkwoman.
'Very fine album alert - 'Into Air' is a surprise and absolute pleasure. Go seek, buy, listen!' @Tony Clayton-Lea
‘…a lush collection that sounds organic and occasionally magical…it’s the music that takes centre stage, speckled with heart-swelling flourishes and sinister undercurrents.’ Lauren Murphy, Ticket, Irish Times * * * *
‘The highlight of the evening for me was Mary Barnecutt's wonderful band Mary and The Pigeons. She plays the cello and sings some of the most intelligent and poetic lyrics I've heard in a long time with beautiful arrangements for piano and strings best of all she sings in her own unaffected voice, she is who she sings and that is rarer than you might think. Her album "Into Air" has been on all day at home and is the perfect antidote to the come down from a great night.’ Billy O’Hanluain, An Nota Gorm
